How to Prove Your Super Visa Medical Insurance to Canadian Immigration

Medical Insurance for Super Visa in Canada

Applying for a super visa is a significant milestone for families who wish to bring parents or grandparents to Canada for extended visits. However, one of the most important and non-negotiable requirements is showing valid medical insurance for super visas in Canada. Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) requires proof of super visa insurance during the application process and upon each entry into Canada. These plans must meet the minimum government requirements to qualify.

Here’s a step-by-step guide on how to provide proof of your eligibility and medical insurance for your super visa application, so that you can move through the process with confidence.

Meet the Eligibility Requirements

To qualify for a super visa, your host must:

  • Be your child or grandchild, and be a Canadian citizen or permanent resident of Canada
  • Be 18 years of age or older and living in Canada
  • Meet or exceed the minimum income requirements
  • Provide a signed invitation letter that includes:
    • A promise of financial support for the duration of your visit
    • A list of all family members included in the minimum-income calculation, with names and dates of birth

Additional Applicant Requirements

  • Be outside Canada when submitting your super visa application
  • Have your visa issued by a visa office outside Canada
  • Be admissible to enter Canada
  • Complete an immigration medical exam
  • Meet all other general conditions, as required

Medical Insurance Requirements for Super Visa

You must provide proof of private medical insurance from:

  • A Canadian insurance company, or
  • A foreign insurance company that:
    • Is authorized by the Office of the Superintendent of Financial Institutions (OSFI) to provide accident and sickness insurance
    • Appears on OSFI’s public list of federally regulated financial institutions
    • Has issued or made the policy in the course of its insurance business in Canada

The insurer must be identified on the proof of insurance. Foreign policies must include a statement that the document was issued or made in the course of the insurer’s business in Canada.

Requirements of Your Health Insurance Policy

  • Be valid for at least one (1) year from your date of entry into Canada
  • Be paid in full or in installments with a deposit (quotes are not accepted)
  • Cover health care, hospitalization, and repatriation
  • Provide a minimum of $100,000 in coverage

You must maintain valid insurance for each entry into Canada and may be required to show proof of paid insurance to a border services officer upon arrival.

Submit Proof With Your Application

Proof of insurance must be uploaded with your online super visa application. Check if the digital copies are clear, readable, and complete. Avoid blurry images, partial screenshots, or missing pages, as these may lead to processing delays.

Keep All Documents When Entering Canada

Immigration officers may request to see proof of insurance even if it was submitted earlier. It is a good practice to travel with:

  • A printed copy of the insurance certificate
  • A digital backup stored on a phone or email
  • Proof of payment

Maintain Coverage During Your Stay

The policy must remain valid throughout the entire stay in Canada. If the visitor remains longer than one year, the insurance must be renewed or extended. Keep renewal documents as part of your records.
